Lab Created Diamonds
Lab created diamonds are increasing in number. This proves that not all diamonds come from deep inside the earth. They are of synthetic quality and are being created in labs and factories all over the world as the natural diamond alternative. Some are as beautiful as their natural counterparts, though possibly not quite as pricey. Technology has advanced so much that it is becoming harder to tell the difference between the natural diamond and the man made diamond.
Also called synthetic, they where first produced in 1953 when a team of Swedish scientist developed a advanced process that combined searing heat and intense pressure to produce a few small crystals. A laboratory grown diamond is physically and chemically identical to the one created by nature.
Most synthetic diamonds are small crystals, purposely created for industrial purposes. They add up to big business. More than 3 billion carats of synthetic diamonds are produced annually. They are the main source of diamonds that are used in industry.
While synthetic diamonds are chemically the same as real diamonds, there are many others that cater to price conscience consumers looking for a jewel that mimics a diamonds appearance. A simulate is a material that has a likeness to the actual gem that it imitates, but it does not have the same properties and its chemical makeup is different.
These dates back to the 1700's when an Austrian jeweler discovered that melted colorless glass with lead oxide produced a hard glass that could be cut polished to produce a brilliant diamond like finish.
